Leadership Team Insights: The Role of the Sporting Director

With only five teams in the English Premier League yet to employ a Sporting Director, the importance of the role feels established.  What is less so is the skill set it commands, and so while the debate about whether it should exist has perhaps been concluded, the one on how to identify a suitable candidate for this relatively new job has only just begun.

Last year, our Founding Partner, David Slemen, shared his thoughts on the five key roles transforming high performance sport with Training Ground Guru, naming the Sporting Director as top of the list. This month, he has been invited to contribute again, this time to elaborate on the role itself.

In David’s latest article for the news and insights hub (highly regarded as the go-to for sports professionals) he explores what is required of the Sporting Director and why this particular post centres around transferable leadership skills as opposed to club management experience.

Find out more about what this role really means, its requirements and why clubs should be looking outside of the sports sector to find a suitable candidate by reading the full article on the Training Ground Guru website.
